Rome, June 2, 2025 – The Italian Ministry of Health has officially announced the new composition of the Consiglio Superiore di Sanità (CSS), Italy’s Supreme Health Council, for the 2025–2028 term. Among the distinguished professionals selected is Professor Antonio Giordano, internationally renowned oncologist, geneticist, and founder of the Sbarro Health Research Organization (SHRO).

The CSS is the highest scientific advisory body to the Italian Ministry of Health. It plays a pivotal role in shaping national health policy by providing strategic guidance on matters such as public health protection, disease prevention, pharmacovigilance, and scientific evaluation. Composed of top-level experts, its function is essential for ensuring that government decisions are informed by solid scientific evidence.

Professor Giordano, who has spent his career bridging Italian and American biomedical research, is known for his groundbreaking studies in molecular oncology and for his advocacy on the environmental causes of cancer. His research on the “Terra dei Fuochi” (“Land of Fires”), a toxic waste crisis area in Southern Italy, helped expose the health impacts of environmental crime and fueled public awareness and legislative attention.

“This appointment is a great honor and a profound responsibility” – said Professor Antonio Giordano. “I intend to bring to this role the experience I have gained internationally, especially in the United States, combining research, prevention, and environmental justice. Science must serve people by guiding policy with transparency and rigor. I am deeply grateful to Minister Orazio Schillaci for the trust placed in me, and I extend my congratulations to all the outstanding professionals selected for this Council.”

Porfessor Giordano’s contributions have spanned both scientific discovery and civic engagement, from promoting the One Health approach within Italy’s national recovery plan (Pnrr), to mentoring young scientists and advocating for equal access to cancer prevention and care. His appointment confirms the Italian government’s commitment to engaging leading voices in shaping a health system based on evidence, equity, and innovation.

SHRO, the nonprofit research institute he founded and directs, remains at the forefront of international cancer research, with laboratories in Philadelphia, Siena, Naples, and Turin, and with a mission to advance personalized medicine and translational science.
