Rome – June 1, 2025 — The Italian Ministry of Health has officially announced the new members of the Consiglio Superiore di Sanità (CSS) — the National Health Council — for the 2025–2028 term. Among the distinguished professionals appointed is Professor Antonio Giordano, internationally renowned oncologist and geneticist, and Founder of the Sbarro Health Research Organization (SHRO).
The CSS serves as the highest technical advisory body to the Ministry of Health, offering strategic guidance on critical issues concerning public health protection, disease prevention, pharmacovigilance, and the evaluation of scientific evidence. This prestigious appointment recognizes Professor Giordano’s longstanding contributions to scientific excellence and his deep commitment to advancing collective health.
Professor Giordano is widely acclaimed for his pioneering research in molecular oncology and for his investigations into the connections between environmental exposure and cancer, especially in high-risk regions such as Italy’s so-called “Terra dei Fuochi” (Land of Fires). He has led the charge in exposing the health impacts of illegal waste disposal by organized crime, combining scientific rigor with a powerful sense of civic responsibility. His academic career spans both the United States and Italy, marked by groundbreaking achievements in cancer biology and translational research.
“This appointment is both an honor and a great responsibility,” stated Professor Giordano.“I will bring to this role the international experience I have gained, with a holistic vision that integrates research, prevention, and environmental justice. I believe in science that is close to the people — capable of guiding public health policy through data, expertise, and transparency. After contributing to the dissemination of the One Health approach within Italy’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR), I am now deeply honored to continue serving my country. I thank Minister Orazio Schillaci for his trust, and I extend my congratulations to all the outstanding professionals appointed to this important council.”
The appointment, made official by ministerial decree on May 29, 2025, reflects the Italian government’s ongoing commitment to scientific excellence and the inclusion of authoritative voices in medicine, research, and public health policy.
SHRO congratulates Professor Giordano and all members of the newly appointed Council, confident that their expertise will significantly contribute to the advancement of public health in Italy and beyond.
As an organization founded by Professor Giordano, SHRO remains deeply committed to supporting scientific culture, innovation, and an evidence-based, equitable healthcare system that bridges international collaboration and community-focused impact.
